A Walk Through Salem is
working with the town to create a Storyline. The purpose of
the self directed tour is to educate the populace on Salem's history,
and geography while appreciating the architecture that really makes
this town wonderful. The tour will also educate people on how art work
is created for a work of fantasy. The Storyline will start
and end in the Salem Commons in front of the Unzipping Tree by the
Knights of Columbus. This line will be a series of footsteps painted on
the sidewalks and streets in town. Plaques and signs will mark off
sites of interest where artwork can be seen or audio listened to
through your cell phone powered by the free software from Google Earth.
Free brochures will also be placed throughout Salem in visible
locations to inform everyone on what the Storyline is and how
they can use it.
These brochures will inform
residents and tourist alike of what the purpose of the line is and how
to take advantage of it. It will explain that the footsteps lead
throughout Salem to historic locations, geographic points of interest,
and places where the original artwork from the story is hanging. Then
the brochure will explain that signs and plaques throughout town are
demarcating important sites of interest. It will explain that the signs
offer a summary of the sites importance and the plaques mark the
locations where artwork from the story hangs. The brochure will explain
how to download interactive applications to your phone or Ipod.
Applications that give access to maps that utilize GPS to trigger audio
and text messages to give you a fuller knowledge of the sites historic
or geographic importance.
Not only does Google offer
free maps for your cell phone, they also offer a free interactive tour
guide called Google Earth. This application allows you to see more than
a printed map. It has satellite images and street views of the town to
guide you through the tour. Plus you can download an overlay of our
tour to place on the map to lead you about. This overlay is called a
skin and it is choked full of places of interest and audio tales about
the magic of Salem.
The tour starts in the Salem
Commons and then leads you through the downtown district into the
McIntire. Then the tour winds through the historic waterfront to the
Willows which empties onto the Historic Bridge Street Neck. Then the
tour ends where it began at the Unzipping Tree. A three mile walk that
can be broken down into different sections.
